3D Systems Introduces Dental Virtual Surgery Planning Solution to Rebuild 3D Print Surgical Guides

October 25, 2021

Recently, 3D Systems, a well-known 3D printer manufacturer, has released Jaw in a Day (JIAD), which is the latest in the company's Virtual Surgery Planning (VSP) product line. This product allows surgeons to visualize 3D printed surgical guides, models and instruments for jaw and dental reconstruction surgery for specific patient situations.

It is reported that traditional dental restorations often require multiple operations and 6-12 months of uninterrupted care. In this process, patients tend to be in a state of tooth decay for a long period of time. Obviously, missing teeth can have various adverse effects on the patient's appearance, mind and life. Thus, in order to provide patients with a less discomfort and shorter time for the reconstruction of the jaw and teeth, 3D Systems introduced the Jaw in a Day, which can assist the surgeon with 3D printing.

Using this product, surgeons can work with 3D Systems engineers using CAD/CAM technology to personalize surgical planning, as well as 3D printed surgical guides, models and instruments, all of which are tailored to the specific surgery and patient. A temporary oral restoration eliminates the need for multiple surgeries, which means that patients can perform a complete dental reconstruction at a much faster rate than traditional treatments.

“The benefit of Jaw in a Day is that we can perform a surgical procedure to complete the upper or lower jaw reconstruction, place the dental implant, and perform a dental restoration. All of these items are done in the same operation.” Lenox Hill Hospital's mouth Dr. David L. Hirsch, Director of Tumor & Reconstruction, explained that he is also a co-developer of Jaw in a Day. “This eliminates the need for multiple surgeries and reduces the cost of multiple hospitalizations and allows patients to return to normal life faster.”

3D Systems explained that in addition to a shorter recovery period, the solution reduces the chance of infection and complications due to a single operation.
